I have been blessed to be the Music Director at the Newman Center for seven years. It continues to be a privilege to coordinate music for our community given the rich spirituality, musical talent and diversity of its members. Here at UCSD, creativity is encouraged as a means to seek God and as a musician, this is a gift to behold. Alongside the music we create together, the choir community has a great ability to create laughter as well. Our theme could be based on Psalm 126: “God has done great things for us, filled us with laughter and music.”
Growing up as a child in Iowa, I was generally doing one of two things: playing sports with my two older brothers or practicing music. Since I soon realized my goal of playing for the Harlem Globetrotters would not come to fruition, I decided to pursue a music career with an initial emphasis on organ and percussion. After college I served four years in a peace and justice community doing social work but eventually found my way back behind the keyboard as a church accompanist and music director. Since that time I have continued to develop training in choral conducting and piano performance. In addition, I pursued further studies in theology and completed my master’s degree in 2005 from the University of San Diego.
For fun, I leap tall buildings in a single bound while singing “On Eagle’s Wings.” Leaping can be very tiring so I also hang out a lot with friends, enjoy the great outdoors and/or search for Truth. If you would care to join our musical family at UCSD, please contact the office for further details or better yet, talk to me in person after one of our weekend Masses. Together we can sing, laugh, leap, and find Truth together.
