Here's some new information about the ethnic diversity of the Newman Center. In the census, we allowed community members to write in their own ethnic identity rather than list a set of categories to select from. Of the 91% of respondents who listed something when asked to identify their own ethnicity: 92% listed a single background while 8% listed multiple backgrounds or called themselves "mixed" or "multi." Those identifying themselves as Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander or any specific East or South Asian naƟonality form 45% of the com- munity. Those identifying themselves as white, Caucasian or Anglo compose 38% while community members who identified themselves as Hispanic, Latino, or with any specific Latin American nationality form 18% of the community. Those identifying themselves as African American or African form 1%, less than 2% identified themselves as Middle Eastern, less than 3% listed a particular European nationality and 0.5% listed Native American. See the summary handout from the October 30 Masses for more details.
