Farewell Fr. Boom

Dear Newman community,

We have some very exciting news to share!

On July 1st, Fr. Christopher Nguyen, SJ will become the new Director of our Newman Center. Even though Fr. Christopher has been on staff since the beginning of the fall quarter, I know that many of you have not had a chance to meet him in person. Hopefully, with things opening up this summer, and Newman getting back to its normal routine, you will all have a chance to get to know him better. Thank you to Fr. Christopher for his generosity and enthusiasm in taking on this new role.

I, on the other hand, am becoming the President of Mater Dei Catholic High School and Juan Diego Academy in Chula Vista. I am also going to continue my service as Superior of the Jesuit community here in San Diego. As you know, all of my previous ministry prior to Newman was in education, and this new assignment is going back to what drew me into the Jesuits in the first place. But don’t worry, you’re not getting rid of me that easily. With Fr. Christopher’s blessing, I will continue to help out with Sunday Masses on occasion.

I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that Edward Chow, SJ will also be moving on from Newman at the end of the summer. Edward will head up to Berkeley to pursue theological studies at the Jesuit School of Theology in preparation for priestly ordination. Edward has been with us for two years and has done outstanding work as a pastoral associate here at Newman and as Director of the Center for Ethics and Spirituality (CES) on campus. We send Edward off with our blessings and much gratitude.

Most of you will remember Chris Nguyen, SJ who was here at Newman two years ago as part of his training as a Jesuit novice. Chris has been reassigned to Newman and he will join the staff in the fall, replacing Edward, as our new pastoral associate. Chris is a UCSD alum and made many friends and connections during his time with us a couple of years ago. We’re thrilled to have him back on staff!

I’m also very grateful to our business manager David Vacchi, our pastoral associate Gaby Arambulo, Deacon Jeff Burns, and music ministers Mark Jacob and Lupe Rios for how much they have embraced the mission of Newman and continue to make this a welcoming place with Jesus Christ at its center. I have been so blessed to work with David, Gaby, Jeff, Mark, Lupe, and with my Jesuit brothers. The last four years have truly been grace-filled.

Thank you to our Student Ministers who continue to open themselves to the many ways that God is working in their lives. What a privilege it has been to minister to our community alongside them.

While we are still a couple months away from our transition, I ask that you please remember us in your prayers. Know that we continue to hold all of you close to our hearts.

With a deep sense of gratitude and affection,
Boom Martinez, SJ
