What is Advent?

Advent marks the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year. Advent (from, “ad-venire” in Latin or “to come to”) is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas.

The Advent season is a great opportunity for us to get in touch with our deepest longing and desire for God’s coming. It celebrates the three-fold coming of the Lord: remembering the Lord’s coming long ago, experiencing his coming among us today, and looking forward to his final coming in glory.

Advent devotions, including the Advent wreath, express the meaning of the season. Our Advent calendar can help you fully enter into the season with daily activity and prayer suggestions to prepare you to grow spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ. Click on Advent Resources for more.

  4. Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  5. Donate or volunteer to help the needy.
  6. Spend quality time with your family and friends.
  7. Attend a retreat or an online retreat.
