Please keep the following in mind when sending in stock donation requests:

  • For tax purposes, the value of the securities being donated is based upon the average of the high and the low price of the securities on the date the securities are transferred to the Diocese in accordance with IRS guidelines.
  • The longest lead time incurred is usually in transferring the stock from its current broker to the Diocese’s designated selling broker. Typically, stock is sold either on the day it is received or on the following business day.
  • Donors will receive an acknowledgment letter from the Diocese of San Diego within four weeks of transferring their shares to Merrill Lynch.
  • Deadline for Mutual Funds: December 1st
  • Deadline for Stocks and ETFs: December 15th
  • Any donations not received by the respective deadlines will be facilitated for calendar year-end to the best of the ability of Merrill Lynch.

IRA Charitable Contribution

For tax year 2025, a donor age 70 1/2 or older can make a tax-deductible transfer of up to $108,000 from their IRA to a qualified charity, such as the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego each year. This is called a charitable rollover or a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). A married couple who are both 70 1/2 or older at time of the transfer can each transfer $108,000 from their IRA’s for a total of $216,000. QCD distributions made to qualified charitable organizations are tax deductible as charitable contributions.

If you reach the age of 73 at any time in 2024, traditional IRAs require you to make Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). These RMDs will ordinarily be taxable income, because you did not pay federal income tax when you contributed the money to your account. However, you can avoid the tax on that distribution by making the RMD as a QCD directly from your IRA to a charity, such as the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego. Your IRA administrator will explain how your RMD distribution can be made to a charitable organization as a QCD, thereby removing the amount of the RMD distribution from your taxable income.

Your IRA administrator may take several weeks to process your request for a transfer of your distribution to the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego. Please consult with your IRA plan administrator for instructions and deadlines.

Distributions from your IRA that are made out to you personally and not to the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego or a qualified charity WILL NOT count as an IRA Charitable Rollover.

If interested, please consult with your personal tax advisor on the donation and tax implications. Please inform your legal, tax, or retirement consultant that we are the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego, a non-profit organization under Group Exemption 0928 with Federal Tax ID # 99-3732854. When making your gift or contribution please designate the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego as the full beneficiary. You may make donations directly to the Newman Center Catholic Community at UC San Diego or through the Diocese of San Diego.
